The Lakshana Devi Temple is a historic Hindu temple located in Bharmour, in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. It is dedicated to the goddess Durga, who is known here as Mahishasura-mardini, the slayer of the buffalo demon. This temple was built in the second half of the 7th century and is one of the oldest wooden temples still standing in India. It is part of the ancient capital of Bharmour, which has also been called Bharmaur, Barmawar, Brahmor, or Brahmapura throughout history. Over the years, while the roof and walls have been repaired, the beautiful wooden carvings and the brass statue of the goddess inside have been carefully maintained, showcasing the artistic skill of the late Gupta period. A visit to the Lakshana Devi Temple in Bharmour offers a glimpse into rich cultural heritage and spirituality.
